Projection Project, Ikon Gallery and

The Deaf Cultural Centre

(January – June 2008)

For six months I worked closely with staff at The Deaf Cultural Centre (DCC) to engage a group of disparate young people an art project that explored Ikon’s programmes. The DCC’s building was new and it transpired that the young people were not consulted about what the building should feel like inside. We took Ikon’s exhibitions programme as a starting point which we documented through drawing and photography. We then experimented with projecting their images throughout the DCC building in order to transform the appearance and experience of being inside it. A trainee artist identified through the DCC supported the project. This project was supported by Engage and Shape Arts. Documentation of this project can be found in the Explore Handbook: Improving Access to Galleries for Disabled and Deaf People.

Mathematics, Architecture & Art, Creative Partnerships Birmingham & BryantPriestNewman LTD,

(September – December 2007)

Together with architect Gavin Orton and the Study Director of Mathematics at Sheldon Heath Community Arts College I devised and delivered an arts based maths project involving a class of Year 8 Students. The students were challenged to work as a team of architects to survey their current maths department and create models for a series of new classrooms. The sessions focused on experimenting with drawing, units of measurement, scale, shape, elevations, collage and printing. Students also redesigned the interiors through producing a range of surface pattern by making their own printing blocks. Gradually their confidence developed as they began to take risks and worked imaginatively. Throughout the project students were encouraged to reflect on the relevance of mathematics in their daily life and how important their creativity was to realising the project challenge.

The Exchange Project, Wodensborough Community and Technical College, Ikon Gallery & Wednesbury E.A.Z, Birmingham

(January - July 02)

During this six month residency Lucy Pedlar and I were based at Wodensborough Community and Technical College working with one class of Year 9 Students and the Head of Art.  We worked with articulate 1, articulate's mobile collection of artworks to open up critical discussion and practical making with students in preparation for visits to Ikon Gallery.  The students made their own work, which was exhibited alongside articulate 1 at Ikon Gallery.

Pot Doodle, Hengrove Community Arts College, Arnolfini, Bristol (May – June 03)

I was the Lead Artist co-ordinating Pot Doodle alongside Arnolfini staff and Hengrove's Arts Manager. This project experimented with different aspects of drawing with Yr 10 students. I worked with a group of students to lead and devise a peerled workshop for a group of Yr 6 students from a local primary school. View more documentation here. In April 03 Hengrove's art teacher and I worked closely together to prepare a presentation reflecting on Pot Doodle for Contemporactive (an Artful conference focusing on contemporary art and the curriculum at Tate Britain).
